Note: every Wednesday I am going to post some thoughts on Social Media. I use it a lot and I like it. It is also a huge part of WordPress. But these aren’t just going to be another list of How to Get More Followers on Twitter, or 10 Tips for Your Facebook Page. Instead, I am going to share thoughts on how social media is used and how I have learned to wrap my own brain around it.
I am a huge fan of Twitter. I use it a lot, and have found my own groove to make it work for me. But as with most things social, there are always certain things that really bug me. And here is one example.
Responding to tweets based only on the post title.
Let me give you an example. Let’s say I write a post and title it Do You Backup Your WordPress Site Often Enough? So when I tweet this, if I copy in the title and the link to the post, you know what happens? Suddenly I get tweets like:
Yes, I backup every day.
I’m not sure, how often should I back up?
Yeah, I set mine to backup automatically with BackupBuddy. (Then they add an affiliate link.)
You see where I’m going, right? They don’t even click through to read the post. Or they answer first, then maybe they go read the post.
Here’s another example of the same post, different tweet. Backing Up Your WordPress Site. Should you being doing this?
Now the stuff really hits the fan. Again, if you added a link chances are they don’t click through. They only read the tweet. And now you get a barrage of tweets like:
Are you insane? Of course you need to back up.
You should really know better Bob.
Of course, why would you ask such a stupid question?
Now these are a bit exaggerated, but you get my point.
So next time you see someone ask you a question or is seeking your opinion, feel free to share. But if there is a link added, chances are you will do better if you read the post first.
